Hand Analysis: 5-J

The most common poker nickname for the jack five might be pretty obvious, but it’s also one of the more fun ones. The Jackson 5 just seems to have the spirit of poker online written all over it, if for reasons I can’t quite name. Still, I wouldn’t raise with this if I was playing your money, even. I wouldn’t do that to you.

Actually, there are certain kinds of circumstances where raising with just about every hand can pay off, even at a full ring game table. Once I was seated with some older gentlemen at a no limit table in Tunica, and found that unless they had a huge pair preflop, they’d fold to almost any raise. They didn’t like putting money in without knowing what was coming. I straddled every single hand (in Mississippi you can straddle from all positions).

I won almost every hand. When I got reraised if I had nothing I knew I had to fold because these guys just wouldn’t bluff. And when I accidented my way into a big hand with rags, I’d get paid off huge. It was some of the most fun I’ve had at a online poker table, even if by all means it was a rarity.
