Globalisation Leads to Lack of Health and Safety Measures in the Paper Industry

United Steelworkers (USW) recently conducted a survey related to the health and safety of workers in the US paper industry. The survey found that many employers are not following health and safety procedures, and thus incidents of injuries and fatal accidents are quite common in this industry.

The survey also showed that safety training of staff has been reduced along with the reduction in the number of union safety committees. Another cynical practice started by the employers is that of rewarding the staff financially if less number of accidents are reported. According to USW, this will actually lead to a suppression of safety flaws in an organization and in case of an accident, there will be a reluctance to allow proper investigation.

All these findings have led Workers Uniting to decide on conducting a similar survey. Workers Uniting is the first global union and is a partnership between USW and Unite the Union. The research project will be one of the most comprehensive studies on this issue.

Speaking on this issue, the Assistant General Secretary of Unite expressed the view that negligence on the part of employers on the issue of health and safety of workers is a fallout of the process of globalisation sweeping across the world market. Echoing the same view, Jon Geenen, the Vice President of USW, said that the force of globalisation is such that identical problems can be seen in the paper industry of both the US and the UK.

An IOSH course can be of benefit to organisations in providing the knowledge to manage safely and effectively in compliance with both the organisation’s policy and best practice in health and safety. It is a necessary course for anyone who needs health and safety training and is broad in the range of the health and safety subjects, and it can also be tailored to meet the needs of any particular organisation - click on IOSH UK for more detail.
